It's always weird when nobles in stories like these break off engagements because they're "not in love." They're nobles -- marriages for them are usually political and/or economic alliances, not love matches. Then again in this case the ex-fiance was probably just making excuses.

The noble marry because of politic, money and many reason but that essentialy concern high noble like count and higher.
The lesser nobility baron and viscount have less power so they don't really need this kind of mariage. If a baron do this, I bet his family his poor so they marry a rich comoner like a merchan since they probably cannot marry into the higher noble.
If the lesser noble are rich, they can marry for love, even comoner. Here the MC is a baron daughter so that good but this kind of setting don't do after the count title.

@Kingdo All the same, the loss of MC's engagement to someone of higher status would sting, if her parents cared about that kind of thing. I'd been wondering where the parents of both sides have been this whole time; the guy breaking off the engagement isn't shown making any sort of amends to MC's family for essentially tossing them aside. Though I guess it doesn't matter for the rest of the plot.
