I believe he was only treated well because of his father. When he died, Hecataeus took over and he became more of an issue because of his scythian origins and him being accused of indirectly contributing to his father's death. It's not enough to justify such a treatment, but that's what Hecataeus wanted and no one dared to defend him. They just quietly went along and did nothing.
