I've come back after around eight months, the first time I reread a series in whole. When I first finished it I gave a 9/10, later 10/10, for this masterpiece, going so far as to adopt Koichi as a pfp. Reading it again I find flaws, but these are minor in this work of art.
The series theme is loneliness. Every character, at one point or another, becomes motivated by a desire to be with others. They are frightened of their loneliness and look for solace in the company of genuine friends. Even after the main arc's end, this theme remains prominent throughout storytelling. Its handled brilliantly, every character showing weakness, with the protagonists overcoming this loneliness and antagonists unable to since they try to make others be lonely as opposed to finding their own company. Maya for example, instead of developing her relation with Nagi to solve her loneliness, tries instead to take from Ootomi Nozomi, leading to her own death as a result. In losing herself she also causes Nagi to choose death, seeing himself unable to reconcile with his brother and only finding solace with her. This makes her look more stupid since she couldn't even protect the one person she ha any company with. This theme comes throughout, and always Koichi Hirose and Nozomi overcome their foes through being together.
The scenes are beautiful. The author knows when to use text and when not to, allowing for funny gag scenes along with ethereal grand shots. The entire manga is eye candy. In scenes showing environments, the full scope of a planet is visible. In heartfelt scenes the characters sadness shines bright. The only gripe would be the facial expressions, which at times feel off, like they could have used a rework. But that doesn't detract from the rest of the artwork.
The single continuity problem I found, both in this reading and last, was its handling of Koga. It seems before chapter 15 or so the author didn't have a clear sense of direction. Initially they wanted a love triangle to get gag scenes out of Nozomi. I'm glad the page time was not taken up by these petty romance games from chapter 15 onwards since there are other stories, romance or harem, which did this stuff much better. That being said, it seems after Koga's attempted confession in chapter 14, she was retconned as a character, the story never giving a satisfying conclusion to her story arc. She's included again in cameos so I do wonder why the author didn't close her story arc. Regardless this is a minor piece in the whole story.
From a second reading and having read over 70 additional manga since my first reading I say the story holds up. Its the best space opera and one of the best romance-action stories. The messaging is consistent and deep. The artwork is gorgeous. Minor plot holes do not change this, if anything I have yet to read a romance story which conclusively finishes all its romance arcs barring maybe The World of Narue. No doubt this gem is a must read, and on my end the lack of English paperback is an enormous shame since this will never get to go on my bookshelf where it rightfully belongs.
10/10.
