Don't put a rifle scope on a shotgun. Thats what it looks like at least but the recoil will fuck up the scope and it won't last as long.

To anyone curious, if using slugs especially, it's not uncommon to use a long-range scope, like a 1.5-9x on a shotgun. Especially for Turkey hunting or other small/medium sized game, where with a good shotgun with a good slug round you can hit from around 150 meters or so, people even use them at 200 meters or more for skill target practicing. If you're shooting at a Bear, you would definitely want slugs over shot. And in rural city areas you'd not be concerned about the scope catching on things. In the wild hunting something that might attack you back, you'd probably want iron sights or red dot for faster sight pictures and it being less likely to catch bushes or trees etc. though.

So for those that might be weirded out by seeing a shotgun with a scope, and thus worried about the initial overall knowledge of the author, while not super common, overall he's fine as it is something that is not uncommon, considering the circumstances.

To @MushuTrueG, pump shotguns haven't had a huge change over the years, so it could be a 100 years old, but it's looks to me like it's likely just your standard best-selling Remington 870 shotgun, which is a 70 year old design that hasn't changed much in that time. They come standard as a 3+1 shell capacity, but a lot of people only load 3 total to prevent the spring from getting overworked. Some people will also remove the dowel at the end of the cylinder as well to allow them to fit an additional shell, but that requires quite a bit of expertise to not screw up. You can get them available as up to a 7+1, which is a bit more expensive, and would have the lower tube be equal in length to the actual barrel. In this case the lower tube is much shorter, so it's not surprising it's the more standard 3+1 tube.

Shotgun looks like pump action from the old west and if it were the case, why scope and couple cartridges, shit carry 6 or more I believe, but it’s an assumption....

what utter garbage writing, first off, you can use a scope on a shotgun, IF YOU WANT A FUCKEN CRUSHED OCULAR SOCKET! the recoil would break your eye, the magic bag thing, while dumb can explain how he gets more ammo, but doesnt explain what kind of money is used, is it fantasy money? GP? yen that he has on him?
now the wolf climbing the tree to ambush him, plausible (kinda) but really stupid. this story( if you can call it one) gets 0.5/10

Depending of type of shell loaded, shotgun can fire accurately enough to necessitate using a scope.
From wikipedia's page, magazine capacity is 4 in its hunting configuration in its under-barrel tube (but I know that some people prefer to not load at full capacity magazine to keep the spring in better condition for longer).

@Mangon Or anyone else concerned about eye damage scoping in on a shotgun, you're never supposed to have your eye touching the actual scope, and with a shotgun, the way they are designed, it's easy to have your eye a good 6+ inches away from the scope and still maintain sight picture just fine. You'd probably want to have some experience with shotguns before jumping into using one with a scope right away, but anyone with even a moderate amount of experience should never have an issue with hurting themselves.

@ankiwi Totally fine. Maybe just google image search: "Remington 870 shotgun with scope", and you'll see a few images pop up with people using them or just an image of the guns on their own that you can slap on there as well. There are even videos out there you can find of people using them to target shoot at 200+ yards.

Also, for anyone curious, it looks like based on the first couple pages, at some point he gains the ability to buy new firearms, as he's looking like to hunt the goblins he's sticking with Remington and using the Model 700 in those shots. Curious what caliber, as it comes in a lot of variants, most likely I would guess either the classic .223, the .308, or the Lapua .338 Mag. My guess would be one of the later two, as the .223 doesn't really have a huge range advantage over a solid slug round in a 870. Maybe 300 yards consistently, 600 with a good amount of skill, and up to 1000 with a very high level of skill and luck. It's MUCH cheaper to fire though, so maybe if hunting Gobbo's it would be the better option. The Lapua though can go through body armor at 1000 yards consistently, and with lots of skill and luck can hit up to 2000 yards or so.

Cost wise though, it's no comparison, Lapua Mag's are like $6.50-$10 a round, .223 is like $0.60-0.70 a round, so like less than 1/10th the cost. Shotgun Slugs and Shot both are like $1.00-4.00 or so on average, depending on what exact kind you're going with, if it's sabot, what material, rifled or not, etc.

Yeah shotguns have a surprisingly tight spread compared to what movies and video games tell us. The scope is possibly more useful detached from the shotgun and used for regular scouting, but it's not some giant mistake as it is now.

My main complaint would be about how long those pellets will remain useful in a world where damn near everything has magically hard skin.
