A problem with the theory that the monster is held to the surface primarily by van der Waals force is that the strength of the force grows as the square of the linear dimensions of the monster, whereas the force of gravity is increasing as a cube. The force is used in the real world by creatures the size of geckos, but not significantly by larger animals because it just isn't strong enough.
