Any creatures with mana (humans included) will crumble apart shortly after death, or as soon as their feystones are removed. That's why they need to keep it fresh while harvesting other materials.

I'm surprised it took me this long to realize that the world building in this series is a lot more involved than most others. I think I just glossed over the meaning of it. It really makes me want to dive back into 12 Kingdoms again, which it's nearly all world building, as well as quite good.

The next book in the series must have come out years ago. I should look that up. I'd recommend the anime or books if the world building in this series interests you. I don't remember it ever getting a comic form, but I wouldn't be surprised.
