the weight probably wont change just harden, think of it as the material batmans cloak is made of in the nolan movies but better and more magical.

The mass has really nowhere to go to but changing texture does have some weird implications for shock absorption like can it become soft enough to bounce like rubber? Or harder enough to be effectively unbreakable with enough magic
