In her defense, she already liked him beforehand, and love is sometimes blind.

In his defense, if I went to that school, I might start drinking too.

...But overall I agree that this whole thing doesn't really have me doing much more than raising my eyebrows. Everyone's character motivations for going as far as they do in this, are completely unconvincing to me.
