I think it's mainly because he hasn't been around for most of their lives. It's also possible he did something way back when that pissed Kyoko particularly off and might have perturbed Yuriko. Souta's too young to have known whatever it might be, but he's still barely known the presence of a father and probably just got used to him not being around much so expects him to just vanish again for years at a time.

Far as I'm aware, though, they don't really go into his history with the family outside of the fact he's been away for years at a time. It's quite possible that's all it really is, or that the story is too busy focusing on talking about the kids to bother with his history outside of the look back at his own high school days where he meets Yuriko and interacts with the elder Sengoku that I know was shown in The Missing Pieces supplementary anime season, and I assume is covered in the 'Prologue' chapter of the manga in Volume 17.

Well, it's okay to call him dad, father-in-law but think Kyouko would flip out as usual if he ever called him "daddy"...

Wonder if the mystery behind Kyousuke absence will be ever revealed, he seems like a cool dad but he clearly did something bad to Kyouko if she treat him like shit... well a part being away, making her do the choirs and being a "parent" to Souta... still that's pretty harsh.
