From my perspective, best friends of opposite gender (or appropriate gender for orientation, I suppose) are only a few steps removed from romantic. Besides, in my mind, if you're not at least lining up enough to be close friends, how can you truly spend your entire life with someone? Not that they have to become romantic, just that I feel like having the potential of being good friends outside of any physical or such attraction is also very important, if that's where something is going.

Anyway, I read The Girl I Like Forgot Her Glasses before this, and Akane feels a lot like Ai Mie. Beautiful, near-sighted, often forgets their glasses with a tendency to space out or say weird things... and almost feels like they're going to go to the glasses store like it's a date just like Mie-san and Komura-kun have well before they started officially dating.
