Been following the WN and it’s been fun, although some parts I can see more nitpicking readers might not like it as much. Up to the third arc, the only thing I found tiring is just the early build up for the conflict in that arc.

It has dark moment, but don’t expect much Loss from the story.
It’s not Goblin Slayer in that meaning.

There’s a chapter when she had self introspection when topic of falling in love came up. After living life as Azuma Renka for 16 years, she doesn’t think her past life being a male influence her sexual preference that much.

But she sees her classmates as children who need to be protected first and foremost (not for any romantic or sexual relationship). So her past life as an adult leaves more influence on her personality. In negative way, this made her never see the other witches as equal, for him they are not allies, but children who have to be protected and kept away from danger.
This is quite obvious from the beginning. Renka has a strong disgust towards the system that puts young girls who had no idea what they’re signing for, to fight an endless war. Also to the society who over-idealize them as protector of humanity, yet nobody talks of the risk involved.

Her friend had similar impression from her answer about love. Her friend expected Renka would say witches have no time to fall in love (as that’s how she’s acting), but Renka instead said the witches should experience love; after all they are still teenage girls, they should have many kind of experience while they can still see the world as children, before their values in life became more rigid when they turns into adult.

The more important about gender bender is maybe in one of the latest story arc,

when one of the Incubus made a theory about how she can so efficiently reuse the incubus’ ena is because her origin is similar to them, ‘male’. Incubus and Witches has inherently different kind of ena. Everyone (including Renka herself) had wrongly assumed she is converting incubus’ ena into a witch’s in her process of propagating her familia. But the truth is, because they have similar nature, Silver Lotus can skip the conversion process, thus the efficiency and speed. Also it gives hint to the incubus to finally invent a way to fight back. Before that, they are totally outclassed by the Zerg legion.
