this reminds me when i keep 2 cats back then. the first week is like a battlefield but then they got along so well. they even eat at the same bowl. such good memories.

It doesn't really work. Cats will either accept each other immediately, be a bit shy around each other for about a week, or declare each other mortal enemies right away. The room separation method is just to avoid the inevitable brutality if they choose the last. What actually happens is that the mortal enemies route sometimes lead to a truce through boredom and exhaustion, and they'll tolerate each other but never really get along.

Edit: I should add that Japanese housecats living in big city apartments like Snacks tend to be extremely docile and non-territorial. That's why very few of them will choose the mortal enemies path.

I never did this kind of thing for my 6 strays and suprisingly nothing major really happened during the 9 years of them living together aside from occasional mild hissing or face pawing. I guess they don’t give a damn about each other enough as long as their bellies are full and there’s roof to sleep under.

That, or maybe I’m just blessed with extremely chill kitties 🤷🏻‍♀️

Ultimately, I figure a lot of things come down to resources or lack thereof. If you know when your next meal is arriving, and you know there's always a place to unwind and take shelter in, the sharp edge of anxiety due to certainty has a chance to dull.
