Aren't earnings based on view time, not total views? So a 30s clip with 1M views wouldn't be worth as much as a 50-minute clip with 100K.

It's a rough estimate, but yes short-form content pays much less than long-form. E.g. shorts pay ~$50 per million. My point was that they are probably still making hundreds if not thousands of dollars.
