To be fair, that depends on what sort of average we're using; if 175 is the MEDIAN height, then large chunks of the population are above/below that. If it's the Mean it's functionally useless as a measure here. Mode is probably the most useful measure here.
I'm just using the general image in the manga to judge Meimei can't be that tall. I'm not going to launch PS and calculator again to count pixels (which actually can be done to give absolute numbers), but if Meimei was 175cm, then it would mean most of the characters in this manga would be far above the average height, which would make little sense.

For all we know, even back issues teacher and Gen might not be meant to be taller than average, but keeping that same general feeling of the series in mind, they just feel like they might be on the taller side. The three university student guys, especially the structural engineering ones, could be best regarded as around the average, forming such a group among the important side characters. Rei is a cool type of character, and being a little on the taller side is considered cool (as opposed to cute), so that would suit the plot purposes. Arase wasn't meant to be a cool guy, so being a bit shorter suits his character type.

Uhm, about that part, sorry to just crash your discussion...
then large chunks of the population are above/below that
Median is defined as exactly that value (here: height) where 50% of all values you're looking at are below and 50% are above. This means: In an ideal world where a Gaussian distribution happens, the mean corresponds to the median. Well, technically, you can call 50% a "large chunk", but it's only one and not several, haha.

In reality, the mean is a bit biased away from this, so we have a distribution that is more like 49% vs. 51% (e.g. female - male ratio), etc. and median and mean are not exactly the same. However, I agree with you that the mean/average value is often not so helpful on its own.

As for the mean height of Japanese women, well, it's apparently 1.58m/158cm, so little senpai (forgot her name) with 1.45m/145cm would definitely be at the lower end of the range, so even for Japanese standards, a rather small young lady. Meimei, being about a head taller, would then probably be somewhere between 1.60, 1.65 and I'd say, that sounds a bit more realistic, and the guys then wouldn't be that huge as Kaarme suspected, probably somewhere between 1.70 and 1.80, so, while maybe a bit taller than the average Japanese men, they would not be giants.

In any case, whenever Japanese people cross my way, I am usually so much taller that I sometimes feel a bit weird, haha.

Oh, and before I forget: Meimei with long hair looks fantastic and cute. Yes, I have a thing for women with long hair...
