Might be reading too much into it (and it may not be even a thing in the LN/WN) but I feel like his feelings of discomfort and inferiority were caused by his mom one way or another, the way she reacts on her compliment to the step-daughter where she quickly backs to say she's not comparing his son to her makes me believe she did something similar before (making him feel inferior) and towards the end on the call where she immediately doubts and denies the story of his son having a female friend kind of shows me that she really didn't have a lot of trust in her son, which could lead to him feeling like a failure.

Reaching more here but so far not a lot of info on his past (and his father) so I don't know how much time passed between the remarriage and whatever was before but maybe since the household was mother and son only, she could've damaged him emotionally in a way before like taking her frustrations on him, getting blamed for the situation (if there was a father, maybe blamed for the divorce), being neglected or never appreciated despite efforts and tried to "fix" things by giving him a new family and reconnecting or bringing back a previous sentiment or something (but ended up creating a place that makes his inferiority worse) cause I really don't see anyone reacting to that not-comparison by saying "yeah it's ok, i'm the failure of the family, no need to worry about it" without anything happening before that.

I might be spewing nonsense and nothing like this happens in the source material but at least with a setting like this, it's what I would expect happening (since I've already seen it in multiple works and IRL)

What the fuck is this faggot's problem? I can see he isn't being mistreated, He had meals ready for him in the morning, all he had to do was sit down and eat. He wasn't even being compared to his sister, and later, HE GETS A PHONECALL FROM HIS MOM APOLOGIZING AND WORRYING ABOUT HIM!!! fuck this overly sensitive fuck.
What does this fuck wants? What does he want to achieve? Is he even being aware of how he's acting and how it affects everyone around him?
I don't disagree with you, but sometimes (a lot of the time) people can be irrational, especially if they get talking to themselves too much and stuck in their own head. You're very right, he's not aware, and he doesn't have a foil until now.

If this series has good writing, his normalization of relationships through the McD's chick will help him introspect a bit more.

There could be tons of reasons we don't know yet as to why he acts the way he does. For all we know his mom could've raised him on the "it's just us against the world" kind of thing, then to turn around and marry a new man and bring a step sister into his life. And even if the family does seem healthy, the fact this new family doesn't make him happy like the the rest of them are about could isolate him further. 'im the only one who isn't happy about this, I'm a piece of shit ruining this happy family' or whatever negative feedback loop he's doing to himself.

Don't misunderstand me, I don't think the author is going to write him any better than "an excuse to meet qt girl at McDonald's" but it's a fun discussion point!

nah me too. I feel like the same about her words being sounds normal and nice but actually have a hidden edge inside.

though i'm not get to this part yet.
Granted, I'm extrapolating a lot there, but I think it's a pretty fair assessment given the way most superficial family dynamics work and how he was triggered by his mom's comment. Only time (or someone that read the novel) will tell.

It's a foreshadowing. But it's not poison. She's just obsessed.
Obsession is a toxic form of attachment, so I'd say the poison analogy is on the mark lol. If she's obsessed with him, that would explain the comment about the FMC, she must've stalked him, saw them together, and said that to separate them. Wait, did she manipulate their parents to get together just to be closer to him? Now this is turning into a psychological horror....

Eh, I say you are 100% off the mark. If you are curious, you can read the ln or wn. It's pretty good up until the climax of the boy's family arc. The girl's arc is pretty decent imo. After that it kinda lost me.

So far I'm not seeing the issue. It comes across like he upset his mom got married at all rather than mistreatment. His mother tried to apologise and to be honest she wasn't really trying to make him feel bad, she was just trying to make her step daughter comfortable. Either there's missing pieces of he's a little whiney.
Naw I can kinda see the problems already. Plus I think it’s just due to it being new and the step dad and sister or whatever are trying to force is what the problem is. You can’t force a family it’s something that comes naturally. Also his step-sister either is really fake or she’s gon be a yandere I’m calling rn

Ngl I don't think you have ever had a sibling or had someone be unintentionally favored because I can understand I just am numbed to the fact after years of it.

Lemme pose a question to you let's say your partner/bf/gf/spouse that is too you is your dream girl. She starts bring her friend over and is constantly talking with them while you are sitting in the background just listening. Now you have had to put up with it for 8-16 months how would your react? Would it be toxic or would you just slink away to where ever is relaxing for you?

Short response to “MC is a snowflake”: Let MC cook first. But have fun criticising him in the meantime :02:

Long answer:This is the family equivalent of re-breaking a bone to correct a dislocation that has healed improperly so to put it back into place.

The problem is because of the circumstances everyone brought into the family, the “normal” family is an act where no one felt truly comfortable and were forced to maintain the farce that they think they were expected to play out.

But MC is not the kind to accept the wife keeping the make up on while sleeping as a married couple just to “look normal” (yes that is actually a thing in Japan)

So MC worked with his step dad to force the conflict so that her mom no longer feels the need to consider about his past trauma and treat him like “normal”, that is he can be compared normally to his step sister. He did not tell his mom or step sister in advance so as to let the conflict run its course properly.

MC also realised that his sister has been forced by circumstances or habit to act as the perfect sister, just as he was previously subjected to, and uses the same conflict to tell her that she can “take a rest” and not feel the constant pressure of having to constantly play as the perfect daughter.

Am I the only one here that thinks his step-sister's flowery words were laced with poison? She literally told him his feelings don't matter to her one bit, suck it up and stay at home so they can all pretend that they're a "normal family." It's pretty clear that she's used to playing the part of the perfect girl and in return gets anything she wants from her dad, and now his mom has started to pick up on the language her dad uses, unintentionally comparing him to his "perfect" step-sister.

I didn't have this exact dynamic at home growing up, but I can totally relate to wanting any excuse to get out of the house to avoid having to pretend everything's fine when it isn't and the emotionally destructive verbal jabs that can come at any time without warning, forcing you to always be on guard.
This is the closest interpretation to the actual situation. Step sis and MC would later enter an academic challenge with said bet is to force MC to stay home and not stay outside so as to “keep the family together and be like a normal family”. Which plays right into MC’s longer term plans.

Bonus: FMC has a similar problem in her hands. But the consequences is the opposite, she gets kicked out of the home for not “playing her role” as second fiddle and be similarly confined to the house

Can't tell whether the author's going for the "acts perfect but is actually a bitch" or the "seems suspicious but is legitimately just nice" character trope with the step-sister.
She really hasn't done anything wrong, but just comes off unlikable.

That mom, failed at parenting miserably. I will say that this will be quite depressing when looking at kazemiya’s face for a while and the sister will be such a bitch too later on, I can kinda sense it already. (Well, she can be genuinely a good girl but that would not be different from many series in this type of stories)

I hope the premise will be ”both of us have a fucked up life, we will try to be happy in our own way”.

I know the guy is kinda overreacting, but him being a teenager it still isn’t much of a big deal, especially since it seems like he have low self esteem. Also i love how the right after the mom apologize about favoring his step sis she immediately put him accusing him of lying that he have a female friend lol.
