I agree that's not romantic at all.

Pretty sure he doesn't know about the other timeline, since he exist only in one timeline. That's why he thinks she changed one day. But from another perspective, he can't save everyone, that's why he lost hope (probably see tons of people getting slaughtered, locked up and r*ped) in his moon viewing.
