I don’t think there’s a right or wrong decision here since there’s way too much uncertainty. My only issue is now she’s confined to a bathtub for potentially the rest of her life and can only go out occasionally like a pet, when in reality her intelligence and capacity is likely that of a human’s. Cute short story though

@ESCrowe i agree but only if a mermaid was commonplace. The diving would be hard to do without getting attention. If he had a good financial source, then sure, he could most likely accomplish that without the diving putting her at risk for attention

@ESCrowe That's a whole lot of fucking time and money to spend for a single guy in a dead-end job with a kid to take care of (in Japan of all places, where people are worked to death). Also, one little mistake like a surfer seeing her and she gets shipped off to a lab. Ideally he would find out exactly where she came from, but he doesn't have the resources to do much else.

He apologized for treating her like a dog implying that you can take a dog in and then then abandon it... No dude, if you take any kind of pet in until it gets attached to you, you now have to take care of it. And that means buying her a kids pools or something bigger than that bathtub.

Unsatisfied by the ending by I understand that a forced sappy ending with unbridled positivity would have gone against the entire story.

It's fair to consider that she should be returned to the sea, but it should be noted that the sea (more accurately, a typhoon) spat out a mermaid child, wounded and unconscious, onto a beach along with piles of trash. This, and the fact that she broke into tears upon finding herself alone back in the sea, suggests that she'd rather not go back in there just yet. For all we know, the trash that washed up with her might have already ruined her habitat, and the typhoon may have done more emotional harm than just a scratch on her arm. It may have even claimed the lives of her friends.

He can feasibly raise her when he sorts his life out, with occasional covert trips to the sea at night to help her get used to it again, as well as teaching her language so she can decide if she wants to go back or stay. There are hurdles to overcome along the way, but this is what this work seems to be about in the end.

I could've read a lot lot more of this, but I'll let myself be satisfied with a happy open ending
Sad ending =/= Good ending, I don't think it would've really made sense to her character or to his
