The author really didn't think of this setting at all, huh?

Who would be stupid enough to accept doing something that would kill them faster? Money and fame are worth shit if they come with an actual expiration date. I'm mostly fine ignoring idiocy in settings, but the flaws on this one are really grating.

@Kamui You sure about that? Just think of all the substances top athletes take that have long term negative effects. Just think of all the injuries they accept, some of which are likely to shorten their lives. Consider the brutal origins of Muay Thai, the high chances of concussion or Parkinson's etc. in football and boxing . . .
In Rome, some gladiators were free men who could leave, but kept fighting for the fame and glory and cold cash.

@Purplelibraryguy There's a difference between a risk and a guaranteed death, but otherwise you have a point.
My problem is that the media clearly still exists unchanged. That, combined with the evil man evily scolding the girl instead of trying to help her control her beats. The dystopian setting is borderline cartoonish.

@Trevoga Sure, the setting overall is totally implausible, not gonna argue that. I've noticed that manga with science fictional settings, even halfway serious ones, are usually more about the mood--they don't bother making it consistent or plausible.
