Well, it's been on chp 1, those knight were weaklings with no power whatsoever. Perhaps it's just a group of 3 or 4 men. They can't handle such power they don't know. Run is a best choice I supposed.

don't know why but I'm coming up with my own little head cannon that the demon lord is a necessary force in that world. so much so that instead of only being one person it's multiple people who gain the essence of the demon lord which has a chance to turn them into a full blow demon lord. and that some amount of the people who were killed did have that essence. since it would be a lot better or at least to me that instead of them randomly killing people they are killing people due to the fact that demon lords in the past had similar characteristics like, oh strong people are more likely to gain the demon lord essence and turn into one, or something else. so that it ends up with the MC finding out about that fact and realize yeah the church has killed countless innocent people but also killed potential candidates for being demon lord and not just killing random people by basically rolling chicken bones. but i doubt that. it's probably going to end up being, the entire church is corrupt and is nothing more then a tool to help get rid of specific people. due to them being a certain race like people of higher power being of beast men decent, powerful people who have different political views that threaten the church or even them not bowing down to the church.

To be fair, you're actually supposed to retreat in armed conflicts a lot earlier then most people think. Even in a full scale war, if 15-20% of your men are incapacitated, you have to start retreating.
