I like Yamada's take on Ieyasu. It's similar to the impression I got of the man from history books. Paranoid and authoritarian.

I often wonder what Japan would have been like if Nobunaga would've survived. Probably more innovative and less neurotic but still brilliant.

Who knows, it might not be that different. Hideyoshi doesn't seem too different from this Ieyasu, and it's not like Nobunaga doesn't want to try securing a legacy.

I think the point the author is trying to push, is how artistically boring the Edo period was compared to the vibrant late-Muromachi and Azuchi-Momoyama era. Sure, there's the rinpa school founded by Koetsu, the nanga and then also ukiyo-e, but the most important schools were Kano and Tosa, who were considered boring and uninspired since they produced "official" art.

I get that, I just think that "if Nobunaga stays in power, things might be better" might be just because of our rainbow shaded glasses on how supposedly great Nobunaga is.

Plus, we've seen this exact pattern (paranoid, authoritarian, and streamlining art) with Hideyoshi before. It's not that weird if Nobunaga and/or the Odas did the same thing.
