This story includes themes of pluralism and multiplicity (where people have "headmates" or distinct personalities and people who share their body). I'm not sure if the author is aware of it being a theme, if he's aware that's what it's called, or even if he's aware that real, healthy people exist who are plural. But in any case, it's a nice thing that gets included mainly for what appears to be for mainly dramatic and plot-relevant effect.
