Hard to say for sure. Do they drink? If they do, either they pee or swell until bursting. Same thing for eating. Do they digest the stuff they eat? If so, does eating make them stronger?
Not sure about the period, but since other zombies were bleeding from the eyes and mouth, it might be something like that.
