1) They decided to do one of those "pick your own adventures" and we're just reading them without going to the "correct" page/choice.
2) They put the completed story on a CD but somehow the CD was scratched. The chapters after 60 are jumbled because of that.
3) They are rushing for a ending because they were promised x chapters before the axe.
