That is so stupid. You have the power, just kill the bald guard and the rest of the witnesses and take that book to the Duke.
He just went and walked right into the den of the corrupt noble, without knowing the extent of their power.
The author probably wanted to try something new and I applaud the effort, but this is a dumb way to go about the story.
