@chicotheguy @SirAllen as best I can understand,

August 15 Liberation Day: Japanese rule over Korea ended on the 15th of August, 1945 upon the Surrender of Japan in World War II, and the armed forces of the United States and the Soviet Union occupied the territory.. Japan's ww2 presence in other countries was the definition of very not nice to put it mildly. So for this old timer to find the present situation worse than what he experienced during the war is saying something.

Daedomumun Korea went through a dictatorship between 1970s and 1980s One of the vocal opponents was a politician was known for the phrase "Though the rooster is strangled, the dawn will break without fail," which meant the nation will be democratized despite the repressive forces against it. He also was known for penning the phrase "Daedomumun," meaning there is no gate for a big road, implying there is no obstacle to the right path.

Our mc wrote down 正道 Righteous( Correct Path ) He then said he didn't know the difference between "正道" the Right Path and the Great Path "大道" i'd guess it's playing off the difference between the Right path from Daedomumun 大道" and the Right Path from Righteous "正道" Being an illiterate not brought up with the classics and the whole calligraphic idiomatic prose thing, it's quite out of my league :p

Also TIL Korea went through 5? different phases of nationhood in the past century: Korean Empire 1897-1910, Japanese Colonial rule 1916-1945, USA oversight? 1945-1948, Republic of Korea 1948-202X with the aforementioned dictatorships from 1961-1987

@Lexical
Thank you very much for giving the context and meanings! Since this is not targeted for the western countries a lot of nuances are not explained.
