I wonder if part of the problem is. I don't think she's actually very good at imagining herself as the focus of romantic attention? Shes used to thinking bout other people- characters in a book. If she had figured out a clean romance trope her 'character' fit into she would have been able to use that. And he got really invested in her sisters romance...

But does she actually know how to like. Pursue that for herself, for real.
