Most likely, she might have been hunching or making herself "small" and that's why no one had noticed. It's common when people try not to draw attention to themselves or have severe social anxiety, self-esteem issues or are just really shy. Heck, I've been doing that most of my life without knowing until my psychologist pointed it out and I'm slightly taller than average.
