I disagree… I think all experiences are happening in a single time line, sequentially. I don't think he moved ten years ahead in time.
My take on it is that Death is selecting people who die around the time as he originally did, rewinding their lives a little and putting his soul in place of theirs. So if this is all happening in the same city, then it must be something like this:
i. He killed himself and was loaded into the body of the executive who was flying at around the time of his death.
ii. The executive died, and he was loaded into the body of the gangster who was being tortured.
iii. The gangster died, and he was loaded into the body of the boy who was a few days from committing suicide.
iv. He lived in that body a while, was murdered by the crazy arsehole, and was loaded into the body of the magician who was in the middle of his show at the time the boy died.
v. The magician drowned and he was loaded into the body of the criminal on parole.
My point being: time is flowing normally, at most with a few skips when he's in Death's realm. Time advanced from the time of his own death, and somewhere in the same city, his mother must be bereaved of him. The lives he was unable to secure for himself are also being mourned by people.
Also, it can't be the same kid from the other life because the protag remembers the identity of the rapist in whose body he's in, as it was in the news. So it doesn't seem that time enough has elapsed for the kid to grow up.
