"Y'all focus on guarding the normies"

oh god it's another one of THOSE translators...
Japanese has at least one word that is reasonably translated as “normie”, so I'd want to look at the Japanese first before getting upset at that. That being said, the title itself was distranslated, so I am already upset. The title is “魔男のイチ” [Madan no Ichi], literally meaning “Magic Male Ichi”, and what do we call magic males? “warlock”s (or “wizard”s, tho because of the definite sexedness of “warlock”, I think that works better), so “Warlock Ichi” or “Ichi The Warlock”. And yet what did VIZ go with? “Ichi the Witch”, despite the fact that Ichi is very specificly not a witch (魔女 [maho])! That's the very premise of the series! That he's the only warlock!!! And they still fucked it up!!! Evil trash.

tbh it makes sense to me. theres no male witches so there wouldnt be a specific word for them either. It just seems like a title thats hard to translate properly.

No, there literally is a specific word!!! “魔男”!!! It's “Madan”!!! “魔男” is not “魔女”!!! Translating both as “witch” is utterly retarded and objectively wrong!!!

Women who are magic users are called witches. In this world, there are only witches. A man becoming a witch is an anomaly and as such the hook of the series. In-universe he would be a witch, as that's the only word for magic users. And when translating, it makes sense to call it Ichi the Witch as it puts the interesting hook in the title.
I can only imagine you being mad at this because you suspect some kind of foul play which would need to be spelled out slowly for me. Do you think they didn't call it Ichi the Warlock for an agenda or, and stick with me here, they did it because it fits the series and its internal logic.

No, he didn't become a witch!!! He became a 魔男, a madan, a warlock!!! It's not the same thing!!! And I don't care about their motivation for distranslation, whether politics, economics, or just pure arrogance! It's bad translation that should be maximally opposed.

for madan (魔男) its just replacing the 女(woman) in 魔女(witch) with 男 (man) instead. So translating it as male witch or magical boy would make sense. warlock is an entirely different word, while it still means male witch it makes it sound it like there are other cases that made it necessary to have a separate word for them instead of just switching the gender.

Warlock has more negative connotations than witch. I think it's that simple. Parents wouldn't let the kids buy something called Ichi the Warlock, but they'd let them buy something that's called Ichi the Witch.
Similar to how normie is an euphenism for normalf*g really. I don't think Jump would ever write that and (and get away with it). It gets you instabanned on plebbit. Even words like retard aren't allowed on plebbit anymore. Of course this is more of a political thing I guess, but still.

"Witch" makes sense. It's traditionally a role for women, and Ichi is unique for becoming one despite being male. The whole point is that he shouldn't be a witch, but he is. The title is communicating that.
