@phil777 True . . . but he also ended the guy's torment, while giving himself an "out" of just being frustrated etc., while also saving face for the rest of the squad by dissassociating the guy's "cowardice" of not killing himself from the rest of them. Ushigorou's no fool.
For my money, the peasant had a point--the samurai "cutting your own stomach open" thing is fucked in the head.

@Purplelibraryguy Yeah I think the main theme of this manga is how sick and twisted the society is. These peasants spent their lives resenting the samurai lording over them, and now they're in the same position they're doing the same things.

You're right but there's another underlying theme here. Ushigorou is becoming more relentless now that he truly has nothing to lose ever since the village incident. This might be a turning point for him to turn into a ruthless figure just like Imuta did. From the beginning Ushi tries to find something he's missing since he started the job and might just want to be stronger. Now his point-of-view might change if he has now lost his way and him killing more people whether they were enemies or former friends is going to delude himself to becoming stronger. As Shimada tries to imply by cutting more people down and being numb to death is a way to become stronger instead this just leads to Ushi becoming corrupted.

You know, if they had all banded together, they could have forced Shimada and asshat to leave them alone and probably let Umekichi live.
Shimada and asshat have said several times that the want reinforments, but they aren't coming. They are being kept in locked down, because if they go out to a brothel, they might get killed, which means they are at least somewhat important to their plans (though only Shimada's boss know how critical their job is/was.) So if they had said something like: "Nope, we ain't gonna kill one of our comrades. Sure, rule 2 was that if you don't follow an order you die, you can go ahead and kill me. Kill all of us, and then what? What about the reinforcement we never got? Who will fight the Satsuma cunts in our stead? You two? Against 20+ guys? You leave Umekichi alive and we will still fight for you when you need us."

Though they probably would have gotten poisoned afterwards. Who would trust guys that defy your orders?
Anyways, you always have a choice. No one can force you to do something you don't want to do.
