Why does Foreman make such a big deal about not speaking to the restaurant staff/making complaints from the position of a customer?

I recall watching a youtube video debate where Hiroyuki (2+4chan owner) was brought on to argue about whether you should complain if there's hair in your soup. The majority JP position would be to say no. Maybe it's confrontation they dislike or maybe they don't see it as too big of a deal.
As for why he doesn't like to give advice, I think it's because if the shop changes something then he'll be culpable for whatever comes after. Ch.27 was the one he spent the entire chapter not saying anything and giving silent consultation. This does feel like something a lot of Japanese people do in real life - they watch and judge but usually don't say anything because they don't want the responsbility that comes after

Foreman uses the word "claimer" to describe himself on pg.17 which I've translated to Karen. "Claimer" has an overall negative connotation, where it implies you're complaining about a non-issue to get something for free. If someone complains in the West, it's more or less neutral because the customer may be completely justified. I'm really glad the zoomers gave us the word "karen" for us to distinguish between the two situations

Anyways, that's the end of volume 15 and with this, we enter the start of 2023. 119.5 is a half-chapter, see y'all soon

Speaking for myself, this manga is a combination of topical themes, good vibes at the end of each chapter, it has adult humor and references millennials like me would get and one big is that it's practically wish fulfillment for older single people which I can relate to.

I can't tell you how difficult it is for people Foreman's age to have what he has. He's got a gang who he gets to see every day, he makes new friends constantly (and keeps them!!), he uses his charisma and knowledge to win people over and get himself out of sticky situations, he has a father figure in Yanauchi, his life is stable with income and outings whenever he wants, eats lots of good food and there's stability and order in his life with very little conflict. It's impossible to have all of these irl, haha

I think there are times where confrontation is unavoidable. Where I'm at there was a coffee shop from a popular (or rather overwhelming) local franchise, the only franchise that has shops open when I haul out my carcass from a night shift. Their spots range from tiny kiosks to actual two-story restaurants - this one was something in the middle of that, near a busy for public transport intersection and next to a subway station.
Well, their desserts started growing mold.
At first, I didn't want to confront them about it and thought I'd start buying the ones that looked salvageable in addition to coffee and, well... I could never imagine a cheesecake that you could cave somebody's skull with if thrown from a 50m distance. Kept checking whether I chipped my tooth on the crust and the inside had a friendly consistency of a rubber slipper slightly melted by the sun.
On week 3, I have quietly alerted the cashier that the mold situation is getting worse. From the subsequent consilium of all available employees over desserts they pulled out (nice and fluffy by this point) I realized that nobody told them anything before - and nobody was buying the desserts or checking the ones in front of the fridge.
Couple days passed and the place was shut down for renovation - or perhaps indefinitely.
It's one of those complicated moments when you realize you should've said something sooner because apparently confrontational people don't go there?.. but also feel the brunt of the outcome on your shoulders. Their diligence notwithstanding, are you now responsible for jobless employees in a tough climate? For taking away the only coffee spot open so close to the subway and vital transport stops that's already working as soon as the curfew is over? For taking away a not-so-bad public toilet??
Ootsuki's case might be less extreme but I definitely understand why he prefers silent consultation. At the very least (hopefully? Maybe?) he won't be there for the aftermath.

Funny chapter, it's been a while since we've seen Ootsuki so opinionated about food. It's been even longer since he's been super POSITIVELY opinionated on food, ngl, I kinda miss the "praising a well-made dish" chapters that were like 75% of the series at the start lol. Personally, I never complain about food at restaurants. I feel like, if it's off, maybe they just happened to screw it up, and it's not like they need to hear someone complain about it to get it right next time. They may already feel guilty about it for all I know...... or at least that's my excuse, really I just avoid confrontation at all cost and would feel deeply embarrassed to have that conversation.

I agree that Ootsuki is a very admirable everyman, which makes it funny that we still occasionally get a chapter set in the underground where we remember that he is a scumbag beyond all scumbags...

But he, specifically managed to find a life that is exactly what he want. He don't have a family that he don't have, he has friends that he likes, he can enjoy himself when he want it, basically how he specifically don't want to get freed because being underground foreman is what makes him happy.

Kaiji is always a piece of trash, that's the point of his manga and part of his charm, haha. Remembere that in the start of the manga he vandalizes car for no reason other than his envy. He's not like Akagi who's a charismatic guy who's in the game for the sake of the game after all, he kept having to gamble with his life because he keep digging more and more holes. TBF, his original debt with Teiai was because one of his friend uses his name as collateral, but he's already an asshole before that. The manga even point it out that the work in the underground labor camp isn't actually unreasonable for his amount of debt, and if he just do his job, with his initial debt he can get out in a year.

Yeah, some of the JP comments about the manga are complaints that it's moved too far away from the gourmet theme. Guess the mangaka has too many things to write about.
I've heard about the younger generations not answering doorbells or the phone because of anxiety and fear of confrontation. Idk how old you are, but I do feel the same way sometimes because when you make a complaint there's a sudden power imbalance which might shift back and forth depending on how they react. It's something I'd rather not deal with honestly

Who'd have thought I'd still be invested in that world even now? I wasn't even a Kaiji fan, though I was happy from a distance that FKMT was still successful (and I liked the blacksuit manga). Generally I'm not an anxious person, I can handle social situations without worrying... I think the power imbalance is a major factor, though. It's just sorta like, well, this is like a minimum wage worker that's depending on me for tips and such, and if I make some complaint than maybe I get them in trouble, or maybe they'll be confrontational back, and like, for me it starts and ends with having a bad meal, I know I can just brush that off, but who knows what the ramifications could be for them if I complain.

I think Akagi is funny cause during gambles he's very intensely charismatic, but out of the game you see him struggling to get the waiter's attention at restaurants lol.

My favourite FKMT manga is actually Gin to Kin, which has the fucking funniest ending that manga can possibly get.

If you don't know, or reminder to people who forget about it, Gin to Kin is a manga about this underworld broker and this one guy he picked as his successor, and there's a very, cough, "intense" subtext about their relationship that the scanlator and reader liked to joke about. It then got prematurely cancelled because... it seemed that the magazine decided to pivot into straight up porn magazine. I always joked to my friend that FKMT should've just pivoted the subtext into implicit.

You'd be surprised to know that a lot of the current Foreman readers either come from /a/ or they're old Kaiji fans who read all the FKMT manga. I sped-watched Kaiji when they did the bog myself and I didn't bother picking up the manga after that
