I think this is based on common Japanese concept of reincarnartion through child's body.

The very first manga which is very similar to this, is Jigoku Sensei Nube / Hell Teacher Nube (the case is animated too)

It's not actually a real reincarnation, but the spirit of the dead comes back to the world by possessing someone and doing what they regret for not to fulfill it. The real owner body will go to hibernation while the possessor can control the body. But, the body cannot contain 2 spirit at once for too long, so one must go to afterlife even if it is the real owner, and one should retain in body.
