The Kiryu family must have got so rich already that making money doesn't feel like anything anymore, so they suddenly got interested in making their lineage more noble. I don't believe that brings you any concrete benefit anymore in Japan, unlike being rich and in a high position either in government or business, but rich people can afford esoteric obsessions.
