I don't get why isekai put so much emphasis on guns they aren't better than calling down lightning like you're freaking Zeus

I can answer that, basically because guns are more effective against humans than magic unless you can cast immense spells. The reason is the same as our history of the crossbow. Before the crossbow you needed to be a well trained archer to be able to hit someone with an arrow, after the crossbow started to gain adoption and was made easier to use, almost anyone could fire a crossbow and hit with lethality. A gun can be fired in an instant and most magic requires a cast time or immense skill, or somewhere in between. If you throw 10,000 people with guns at 5 mages, the 10k may or may not take large losses, but the 5 mages are more than likely to die. The 10k people with guns have a lot of tactics they can use to attempt to kill the 5 mages, the 5 mages are just thrown into a maelstrom that unless they were amazing had little hope of winning.

There is obviously a lot of caveats like armour, the spell system, what guns are being used(a gun does not just shoot rounds that fit in your palm, they can be the size of a bus) and probably some other, but if you have me numbers with guns vs a minority of highly trained magicians, I would take the army with guns.
