That's true to some extent, but some people don't like saying or hearing "sb's mom", especially these days.
The cultural background makes that custom comparatively acceptable, but it still sounds weird enough even in Japan.
Considering this manga's theme and the author's attitude, I suppose she put subtle criticism into that conversation.
