Some people have never read wuxia/xianxia, it seems. Cultivators have to be selfish and audacious, otherwise they couldn't be cultivators, or at least it would be really hard. I guess the same people have never played RPGs either, as if there's money lying around, in every RPG the player is meant to collect it. In the end it was criminals' money, so if he had left it behind, it would have been collected by the police, and it would have either ended up in the pockets of some high officials or the government would have used it to fund spying operations (it was euros, after all). Much better the MC took it.
