Any reputable research done on it indicates it does nothing beyond a placebo effect.
This is a work of fiction in which Qi is something real, so acupuncture can work in it, but in real life all "Chinese medicine" is mostly elaborate placebos, with a few exceptions that had some effect.
But in the case of those for which research shows they have some actual effect, the active principles of the traditional drug are often isolated to produce a better medicine without the impurities and shady ingredients used in traditional manufacture.
