Richard's obsessiveness and the whole Colin family affair really feels like the author wrote themselves into a corner and just slowly had its absurdity fall away into the background. Surely it'll be pulled out of the toybox again when the head of the Mage Tower needs to be relevant again, now a "nutjob" having missed Ayrin for over five years, but I definitely wouldn't mind if all Rich and his dad never showed up again.
