I'm confused about how bans work on the forums

Are the bans on MangaDex Forums proper indefinite bans or more like Twitch bans, i.e. temporary suspensions?

For context, I noticed a couple of users in old threads with the "banned" tag under their avatar. From reading their messages, it seemed obvious that they were properly banned from forums for posting heinous shit one too many times. Some of it is so bad, it's bordering on rape threats. But then I reached the ongoing sections of the corresponding manga, and these users are posting new messages, while still having "banned" tag under the avatar on each message. New messages are relatively better, but it's often still in the same misogynistic and misanthropic manner that the forums might be better without.

How do bans work on the forums? Or does the tag "banned" mean something completely different and isn't related to banning users on the forums?

The forums have both temporal and permanent bans (and unavailable profiles), the detail about the banned tag is a glitch or users haven't re-logged into the forums, as an example if someone receives lets say the contributor role in the site, that title will not be displayed into the forums until they log out and log in (into the forums), it happens the same with the banned tag, usually it goes away, but in a few cases, users have reported that is not being removed, which is a glitch... So it depends
