I had read spoilers in the comments previously that said it was Lily, but it made no sense and I just ignored it as trolling... To think it was true.

Finally that secret is out and we can talk about double-agent Lilly. They kept most of everything from the LNs but rearranged some small details+ gave Thane more to do.

If you go back and check out chapter 43's cover page, you'll notice Lilly is drawn as a puppet who was changing her look, and with strings attached to a hand maneuvering her from above. That was a fun hint.

They really had us novel readers for a second with the Thane lookalike. I guess it all fits back together in the end.
I do think that once this is all over Rae owes Lily an apology for acting this way towards her, although I don't think it's reasonable for her to have predicted the split personality thing either.

Yeah she definitely didn't know. Lily was barely a setting background character when she first knew her. And Alter's appearance at all was nowhere in the original game.

Her change in appearance was described in the LNs too, as well as her use of the gender changing magic. The manga just made things clearer regarding the magic use (and we get to actually see how she looks now).

I think the LN was a bit subtle about Lilly changing genders as Black Mask so that might be why people thought that was entirely new. Even I had to reread and notice Rae mentioning that theory once in the books.
