it's pretty classic webtoon pacing.
they open with a "prologue/pt0" that generally shows off things from later in the story, and this feels like they're aiming for a slower burn, so we don't get to learn why yet- it's also implied that something big happened during the fight

I don’t mind how chapter 1 was, but the gender swapping chapter would literally have been one chapter, and that would have showed off some action and magic it has. Only reason I can see why they did this is because they want the chapter explaining his magic before he’s showing off. Either way the pacing felt so much better in the LN.
