This is a great continuation of Kenzo's tale. The son takes over his father's mantle and pretty much started a proper village in the same spot Kenzo lived. Simultaneously, Mitsuko got what she truly needed, courtesy of Kenzo again.
I understand the people who didn't like how the survivalist elements were toned down, but considering the fact that Masao is younger, has better access to all kinds of stuff and is a whole lot more prepared to go off the grid, his own change of lifestyle to a mountain farmer was implied to have been much smoother than Kenzo's. The author seems to have also considered this, which is why he showed Masao immediately trying to rebuild his father's treehouse etc.
