@Gabagu but is THAT really it? I'm sure you're taking the quiet life concept too literally. Just because you're poor doesn't mean to escape poverty it's only about getting a new job or a second job. The reason politicians are so disconnected with regular folk is this exact fact.
A good job can change your life and cause you to escape poverty but how does one get such a job? Life ain't simple. Now there is social programs in place that try to help but it still hard or borderline impossible.
You mentioned this fictional parent. He may be able bodied which is already a huge plus for some, however his education doesn't seem great. If he had the opportunities than perhaps he's just not very bright.
Education is the step by step route to wealth sided with pure effort. The problem is, as even this chapter mentioned, it ain't free. I could list the societal issues with impoverished people having trouble escaping poverty but it's already too long.

Ok but the thing is, didn’t the father come from a semi rich family to begin with? So it’s not even about escaping poverty’s rather, he fell into poverty despite having a decent starting point. Which, according to the uncles here, is because he was idealistic with how he wanted to live his life, and as readers we can definitely see that in his behavior. He’s honest, yes, but also foolish.
I don’t agree with his uncles’ treatment of the father, but they’re also right to a degree about what they're saying. He’s responsible for his choices.

MC being so poor to not afford food/school, rich grandparents would of helped out. Figured they dead cause hard labor from poverty.
As for uncles not lending money. I understand it, but I'd still help paying school fees directly for my nephew. Gift school supplies as well. Cause you never know what the adult might spend it on. People are also stuck in poverty because of substance abuse including the so-called legal cigarettes & alcohol (that vaping shit counts as cigarettes).

it's not like you suck on one thing, you can try another thing that profitable. The problem is do you even have a chance? There's not much option for being poor, i understand how mc dad feel, son/daughter priority even it would hurt yourself. I think this is common especially at Asia?

@BuffSoul But it doesn't look like his father was impoverished. It looks like he came from a decent family and probably got a decent education, then instead of trying to get a decent job he instead chose that even though he has a kid to take care of he wants to live a quiet life of being destitute even if that means his kid suffers. He chose his quiet life over his kid's future, and even in the school it looked like every other kid was at least living an okay life except for the MC who was forced to wear rags because of his shitty dad.
If he was from a poor family background and had no opportunities then I would understand, but that's not the case here, he chose a really miserable path that made his family suffer. His siblings on the other hand have done quite well for themselves and they came from the same background, but this dad has no ambition and even now he bows his head before everybody living more like a worm than a human being. He even actively avoids money except when he needs to borrow it then he suddenly remembers money is a useful thing to have.

Truthfully I'm more shocked that their own family doesn't help, we would've even bought them a house if they needed it, why's it so hard to help your own brother and nephew ? Also since it's just "some mesely yuan" then just give it to them, it's so little you wouldn't even notice it now would you ? And they'll pay you back afterwards, just where has common sense gone to lmao ? And they're rich yet they're the ones kicking them out of the house and even saying that he shouldn't talk about money when they meet ? Well ngl if you're someone I know and always come to me just for money and never to say anything else I'd be angry as well and wouldn't want to give you anymore unless you pay me back and just tell me right away that I'm your bank instead of a friend, also.....banks do exist right ? Just take a loan man !
Edit: And yes he's an annoying selfish piece of s***, he came from a good family yet he did this, and even when his son wants to show off or help him he refuses it, that's not time that he needs but a brain and if he really didn't care about the cars and money then why not just let your son handle it, you don't care about it after all, right ? Or that's just when it's convenient lmao, he even let his own wife get kidnapped and didn't talk to anyone about it he didn't even try rescuing her, we can say he did it for his son but why not help him more then ? Or is he being lowkey for good reasons ? If so I might try to understand, but no one told him to be so poor as to not afford school, a house, or any other necessity.
