I really recommend people to read the novel version of this chapter btw, cause i would argue the stuff Yom cut from the novel version is the most important part of this chapter lol
This is a matter of execution of two SEPARATE things. Example being Harry Potter the Books vs Harry Potter the movies. Movies have directors that prioritize somethings over others to make a movie flow accordingly. However, if they do a bad job, I have to dip into the novels to "fully understand it", which, I would consider "Doing Homework". If I have to do "Homework" to fully enjoy something for something adapted, then the person doing the adapted version (IE movie/manga in this case) is doing a bad job.
Reading the novels SHOULD only add more stuff around the fictional world that is not really necessary but adds more to the experience, NOT withholding key plot related information that drives the story/characters forward.

So, Yuu takes ownership of his lie and retracts his confession realizing he wants to be with Yami (and basically owning he wants to be with a shitheel. Well, at least he's being honest that he wants a I-Can-Fix-Her-Atomic-Meltdown-Trainwreck), and now Hikari is just trying to deal with the aftermath of everything. Hikari has been the most shafted of all these characters and was the least deserving of all of it AND to add salt to the wound, she has received practically the least screen time due to all of this so far (Seriously, fuck you author for that). AND she even went to bat for both of them. She deserves to be mopey here, but I do want her to get out of this blue funk and jump out at a new life not tied to Yuu/Yami. She truly deserves that.
Yuu, it seems, completely missed the point in Chapter 38 when Hikari said she loved him but hates liars. He's decided to retreat while profusely apologizing when what Hikari really wants is for him to step the fuck up and approach her for once.

She rejected him tho. To him the thing is already over.
Hikari didn't reject him - she told him she loved him but hated that he was lying to her. She went to confront her best friend to get her side of things and Yuu, instead of bothering to explain anything ran away.

While I hate that Hikari isn't taking a proactive approach with Yuu like she did with Yami it's understandable that she wants Yuu to, for once other than his confession, be proactive and come to her.

Also, it's criminal how much Yom left out when you compare the novel to this chapter. Hikari talks about how she's hiding from Yuu - she's sitting in her room with her back literally to Yuu's room, she leaves her house late and checks the train platform for Yuu - she takes the next train just in case and ends up rushing into her classroom at the last second.

She mentions her two friends asking if she's ok and how she doesn't want to talk to them right now. She mentions how Yami is missing from school and how the teachers and classmates think "ah, it's happening again" and how no one seems to want to help Yami and that Yami might not be able to graduate. She thinks someone needs to step in to help Yami before it's too late but feeling relieved she doesn't have to see Yami face to face right now. She says someone needs to be meeting with Yami and talk to her patiently and convince her to come back but then thinks "But who's going to do that?" implying that maybe this time Hikari isn't going to reach out and be the life preserver for Yami.

In the manga she just says "What are you apologizing for?" but in the novel she thinks about how she hasn't replied to Yuu because she still doesn't understand everything and wants to know exactly what lie he's apologizing for - for hiding his relationship with Yami? for confessing to Hikari but not meaning it? She wants explanations.

Then it cuts off right when she's talking about wanting him to come to her but in the novel she yells it and right after the doorbell rings and she thinks Yuu heard her since she was yelling - but it's her father. Side note: why the fuck is Hikari's father ringing their doorbell to get in?! Dude doesn't have a key to his own house?!!?!?!

Worst of all, Yom cuts out the fact that right after the doorbell fakeout, Yuu texts Hikari letting her know her two friends came to visit him and tells her to thank them for him and to not be mad at them as they came without telling her. Right after that Hikari has dinner with her parents and they notice she's in a better mood.

He is not running away tho, she rejected him and pushed him away. To approach her now would be something only a obsessive stalker would do
She told him she hated liars, he didn’t try to explain himself. Heck, last chapter he clearly said he expects her to be fine. Doing nothing won’t resolve the problem. He is running away.

Did you say she rejected him? Or did she just get mad at him for lying to her?
Because I know we explicitly saw the latter in the manga, but not the former.

It cut from that, to her fighting with Ayami, and then the next chapter was the arc of the Dynamic Duo hunting Yuu down to interrogate him.

And while I've yet to track down the novel version for this chapter, nothing here indicates that Hikari has rejected his confession; only implying that they fought, she went off to confront Ayami, and now we're here with her stewing over the fact that Yuu has once again run away and given up.

Damn Yom really cut the content then. Maybe they’re planning to take 2 chapters to adapt one novel chapter now ? Or maybe Yom is not in a good health and can’t do much more :thonk:

Bro I'm spiraling right now trying to figure that out. It's criminal how short this chapter was when we were told months ago this manga was going monthly but to expect longer chapters.

Hell, would it have killed them to draw her dad - I want to see what the guy looks like since he landed her smokeshow of a mom.

huh, that's a fuck-ton of added info.

I dunno. I'm on team "Hikari deserves a break from being the handholder", so.

It sucks, but I think she's right to not be the one to try and save Ayami. She did that already, and at a certain point, you have to prioritize yourself, no matter how much you might care about the other person.
But as far as Yuu goes....dawg's gotta fuckin' nut up and actually take a step himself, for once. His character's as stagnate as ever now that he's once again simply given up at the first sign of friction, reading the subtext from those texts, and if he really does care about her, he should walk that talk.

Hikari shouldn't be expected to save everyone, every time.

I wish Hikari took the initiative this time.

Yuu won't do shit (Unless it's Yami, lol jk) and she can't always expect him to do so every time.

If you want to talk to him, go talk to him.
Though, I wonder what excuse they're gonna use to make Yuu not sound like a blatant liar for saying he's loved her since long ago and never gave up on her while also sleeping with and being in a relationship with Yami.

I know he apologized for being a liar, but I want to see if they actually pull through with it in the story, or if it's going to turn into a "You thought this was the truth, but actually.." type of story.

We shall see
