And, if I am not mistaken, she shed some tears when she decided to petrify herself.

So it's a suicide, not an accident.

The OG myth version is like that, but most authors use the DnD version (kinda like how fantasy elves/dwarves take after Tolkien one) that can be affected by its own petrifying gaze.
