This is actually pretty straightforward. It's just that nobody is talking about it like adults. Boy asks girl out. Girl turns him down. Boy goes for girl's friend instead. Girl starts being friendly with Boy, and acting like a total tomboy out of nowhere. Girl Friend sees this as her trying to take Boy; she is not amused. Boy sees his opportunity to make moves on Girl. Girl is being more distant with Girl Friend lately. Girl Friend puts 2 and 2 together and assumes there's cheating.

If you're in a relationship, 1 on 1 times with members of the opposite gender are a no no. Especially when you've already made it clear you have feelings for the other person. MC stepped onto the landmine because he didn't know the history here. Boy is probably using Girl Friend as a seat warmer for Girl, so to speak.
