I kinda wish he was a better villian. How he managed to get the scam started is beyond me, the amount of persuasivenes he showed was at the level of "I'm louder, so I am correct!"

While i agree with you... Life tells me that the one who IS louder normally wins And not the one with the thruth...

True.

Also, they employed the tactic of fear and guilt (saying it was the villagers' fault for invoking the wrath of god or whatever).

Basically the exact same thing that many phone scammers employ today.. especially effective against elder people as this chapter demonstrated. Easy 'nuff for some bum sitting a scam office in Kolkata, India to pretend to be the "IRS" over the phone and threaten action against some 60+ year old person who doesn't know any better to get them to fork over their money.

Well, actually.. more recent scammer strats get way more complex than that.. but my point still stands.
