there was no timeperiod in the history of earth where humans regularly died around the age of 40. As lifespan is an average if you have tons of people who die before they reach the age of ten it naturally lowers. But anyone who made it to adulthood would make it to the same ages we do so long as illness, injuries, war or malnutrition didn't get them first.

Yeah the average age is lower because a bunch kids died during childbirth not because people died young most of the time, which people did but it's not the averge people were just beasts and didn't care about age or conset
