Did this play out better in the webnovel/light novel/where ever it was adapted from? Because this was really dumbly played out.

I don't mind plot holes, but this was a plot cliff ever since this arc started. Right when I was warming up to how dumb it was again, the author went out back and shot the story repeatedly. Whoops, need to force a reason for the party to leave because of unfinished business. Let this ranking member of the clergy/religious organization just appear here 'because I was on the opposite side'.
Leads into the worst 'hostage' negotiation possible.
The motive is fine, the actions are not. Just what. The only saving grace is character and outfit designs anymore.
