People understood how tasty salt is ONLY after they tasted french fries with salt? WTF? In most cases anything with a bit of salt gets better. MC supposed to be OP because of his reason, but to me it seems this mangaka doesn't now wth "reason" is. I'm considering dropping this because it's getting worse with each chapter.

@Kyto1984 well, i imagine magical preservatives would also exist in that world

and it seems like he's banking on the chances that the salt's high price is only due to its niche of being a luxury item that only the nobles would buy, that the salt is only expensives due to the monopoly of those merchants with connection to those nobles instead of lack of supply
by establishing that there's also a decent demand from the commoner for salt, he's aiming to break the monopoly by bringing in the common peddlers looking to catch the newest craze to the mix

tho how salt can even achieve those niche status even tho it's like, the easiest spice to use that's basically usable to any food is another matter entirely

@Kyto1984 you should go and reread the chapter. He said his goal is to increase the demand for salt and in order to do that he needs to make it cheaper, not the other way around. and the whole thing happened in two panels where he said he wants to increase demand to make the supply higher and therefore make it cheaper. The logistics on how to do it is not explained so don't get all hot and bothered about it.

@LordMgPL a kilo of salt is like 100 dollars is how they described it. That shit is expensive in no way is a commoner going to spend that to make his dished taste better. The OP of the MC is that it made the dishes better and not increasing the prices of the dishes. So far it happened only because he took the salt for free so it won't work for the long run which is why he is trying to get the salt prices down.

My guess is scaling? Since salt is not a nutritional necessity, it's a luxury good that only the rich can afford. Assuming the chefs of that world have not understand how good salt is in cooking since they are more focussed on other stuff? So salt is an hidden gem? If the demand increases such that the masses would like to use salt then how would the prices decrease? Scaling is probably why it's expensive, the people who make the salt probably only scaled enough supply for their few customers the rich, if everyone started using salt, they would scale the production of salt to match. Optimizing the process it would make salt overall cheaper and they should be able to make the same or more profit by selling to more customers at lower prices than selling to the 1% with high prices. Or even make a "premium" salt brand and a common one and diversify for more profits.

Well this is my half ass guessed based off only taking 1 college level economy course. Take it with a grain of salt.

How the heck is salt that expensive when they have clothes that isn't a shades of dirt. Salt is a big component in dye making. Heck, how does their society even functions without salt for the sake of preserving ingredients.

It couldn't be... that a note book of a Chuunibyou High schooler got Isekai'd?! 😲😨

And whenever it is opened a former Chuunibyou guy screams in japan: "AHHHHHHHH! DON'T OPEN IT!!! AHHH DON'T READ IT!!!! PLEASE STOP RECITING THE SENTENCES!!!!"

Scary. 😱

@derkommissar salt used in dyes doesnt have to be as good as salt you eat so they can use mineral salt freely but it probably has some heavy metals or other toxins

I'm liking this manga so far. The protag is not over powered but is able to live interestingly simply because of their ability to see things from another perspective. Also the reasoning they have going is fairly good as well.
I have seen many comments criticizing the usage of salt, but it is perfectly reasonable. In the world the author has created the dietary need for salt is gone (magic muggufin), thus it has turned into a spice only. With it's rarity it can be compared to saffron. Saffron is not rare, and is not hard to cultivate, but it's current market price is about 2,000$ per kilo. It is a luxury spice, and not used in many common dishes.
Now the protag wants it because they are used to having it in their diet, and for the taste. So they use modern economics to make it available. First they up the demand. With demand, the supply will increase, but if it goes the way the protag is hoping, the demand will outstrip the current supply, making more traders bring it in. Which will start a battle to for the traders to sell off their salt, which is won by traders lowering their price, just a little below what others are selling at. Eventually the price will level off, but be substantially lower than the luxury price it was initially. (this happened with chocolate) And the reason the initial seller is going along with this, and even giving them salt for free to create the want, is that the first sellers (before the other traders bring in more) will stand to gain a huge profit.
Well done to the author.

What a lovely application of economics. A simple demand increase resulting in an overall long term price decrease. However, the resulting profit is coming from the temporary increase in price. A nice analysis from @daraku

Oh wow that’s pretty interesting. It implies Japanese experimentation with this world? Or observation? Definitely influence from earth regardless. The chapter was good overall.

I remember when I first read this series a while ago I was wary of it being too character focused and obnoxious in regards to “muh powerless but observant anti-hero mc”. But if it mixes in interesting plot it’ll be a pretty good isekai.
